It’s Actually Not About the Weight

It’s Actually Not About the Weight

Yes, clients come to me for weight loss, and I back that with a money back guarantee, so we both are very invested in them getting what they came for.

But I actually don't care that much if someone weighs exactly what some chart on the internet says they should.

I actually don't care that much if someone looks the way the culture says women should look.

Me personally, I'm much more interested in how I feel, and I'd like to bottle that feeling and just give you a free sample.

Because if you could feel how I feel for just a few minutes, you'd have all the motivation you'd need to eat more veggies and less ice cream.

You'd find the time and the cash for a yoga or Pilates class.

You'd have enough hope to dive into the deep mental and emotional healing work we'd do together.

Now, realistically, my life is not perfect.

I still have crappy feelings and eat too much chocolate and weigh a little more than the chart on the internet says I should weigh in order to be the perfect modern American woman.

But y'all, honestly, I feel sooooo much better than I did 5 years ago.

Why?

Because I've changed the thoughts and foods I use most of the time for fuel, and that has changed the emotions and the sensations in my body.

And when the yucky emotions do come up, I'm getting better at sitting with them and letting them process through.

I still have a physical reaction in my tummy to telling someone who wants a yes that I'm a “no”, even though I mentally am clear that I'm not exchanging money for something when I don't see the value.

But I'm doing better at being willing to sit in the discomfort, because I've learned in business and in life that whoever is willing to be with their own discomfort wins.

It hurts my heart to see women over 40 feeling yucky and thinking that there's nothing to be done.

There's so much to be done.

There is hope.

So I'll keep sharing as much as I can for free (are you following me on Instagram? I spend a lot of time there these days.).

But for those who want a mentor, I'd love to work with you to develop the skills I've learned so that you have them, too.

I want you to feel better, so then you can go forth and slay every day.

Or just relax for 5 minutes, enjoying the luxury and knowing it is allowed.

Anticipating and Overcoming Obstacles to Weight Loss

Anticipating and Overcoming Obstacles to Weight Loss

Overcoming obstacles to weight loss leads to greater weight loss success.

Anticipating and overcoming obstacles to weight loss will help you plan more realistically and improve your odds of weight loss success.

One of the exercises I lead my clients through is that once we’ve designed a new positive habit, we look at the potential obstacles to weight loss.

It’s not often that a coach asks a client, “why WON’T this work?”  But by looking for what could go wrong, we are able to develop strategies to overcome those obstacles.

For example, I had a client who wanted to drink more water in the evenings and on weekends.  One plan we created was for her to put a pitcher of water in front of the TV, so she’d see it while she was hanging out.  That would create a cue for her to drink a glass of water.

However, she often has younger kids in the house and anticipated that they might pull the pitcher over, spilling the water or even breaking the jug itself.  Through this conversation, we were able to anticipate that issue and overcome it.  Instead of a glass jug of water, she’s going to use a reusable water bottle with a screw on lid, so that if it is knocked over nothing will break or spill.

Now, this may seem like a small issue, but the process I outlined works in other areas of your life as well.  And most importantly, by anticipating and avoiding at least a percentage of the fails, my clients experience a greater success rate by overcoming weight loss obstacles, which helps them stay optimistic during their weight loss journey.

P.S. It's time for your to lose the weight.  You absolutely can do this once you have the right support.  Jump on a Zoom call with me and we'll get you started.  Just find a time on my calendar.

How I Lost 50 Pounds in 2020 At Age 46

How I Lost 50 Pounds in 2020 At Age 46

I lost 50 pounds at age 46.

That's right.  In 2020 when everyone was pandemic-ing, stress eating, and emotional eating, I managed to lose 50 pounds.

Women over 40 who want to lose weight, are you wondering HOW I lost 50 pounds at age 46 – especially in 2020?

I used a completely different approach than meal plans and exercise plans.

I used my mind to lose 50 pounds at age 46.

I started to get in touch with why I'd been eating when I wasn't hungry, and I started addressing all those deleteable drivers of eating.

I didn't think of myself as a stress eater or an emotional eater, but I was definitely an unaware eater!

I had SOOOO many reasons to eat.

But I learned that really there's only one good reason to eat if you are trying to lose weight, and that's because your body needs fuel, and it's telling you that through physical hunger.

Now I help clients do exactly what I did – identify all the B.S. reasons for eating and start cutting those out, so we can lose weight in our 40s without hunger or deprivation.

As a woman over 40, maybe you are eating without even really noticing, so bringing Awareness is all you need.

Maybe you have a lot of social rules that are ruining your health that you can start to Clear out – things like eating to be polite, because the food is on sale, or because you don't want to waste it.

Maybe it's deeper – subconsciously the excess weight is protecting you from unwanted sexual attention, showing your connection to your family of origin, or due to ancestral or past life experiences.

Maybe you are an emotional or stress eater, so you just need to be taught some new strategies for what to do with feelings and stress.

Maybe you just need an Energy boost to believe that weight loss is possible for you – YES, even though you are a woman over 40 and what worked in the past to lose weight isn't working any more.

Ladies, the struggle is real. Perimenopause and menopause are playing with our minds and bodies and no one is talking about it. But this is my jam, and I'm here to help.

As you are probably well aware by now, I offer one on one coaching to help women over 40 lose weight.

How to Reinvent Yourself

How to Reinvent Yourself

Three steps to reinventing yourself.

Ready to reinvent yourself?

We tend to think we are who we are, and that change isn't possible for adults.  That's just not the case.

I often joke with Darren that he's living with Lisa 3.0 because I've changed so much recently (this isn't my first reinvention of myself, though – hence the reason I'm not Lisa 2.0 anymore).  So if you want to make changes to your life, I'm happy to share what I've learned.  So if you are ready to uplevel, change, and reinvent yourself, keep reading.

1.  Get clear on where you are.

If you are ready to make a change, first assess where you currently are.  For weight loss, your current model might look something like this:

Circumstance:  I weigh 225 lbs.

Thought:  I can't lose weight.

Feeling:  Hopeless.

Action:  Eat sweets to feel better emotionally.  Eat large portions out of habit.  Feel to tired and out of shape to go for a walk.  Snack frequently, because supposedly that boosts metabolism(?)

Result:  Don't lose weight.

This may seem a bit grim, but taking an honest look at your current reality helps you see how your thoughts drive your feelings and your actions and then show up in your results.

Before you can reinvent yourself, you need to know where you are today.

2.  Decide where you want to go.

Think forward to the future.  If you had a magic wand and could wake up tomorrow as your future self who had attained the goal, where would she be?  This time we work the model from the bottom up.

 Desired circumstance:  Weight 150 lbs.

Thought:  I can reach my healthy goal weight.

Feeling: Determined.

Action:  Cut out sugar and flour.  Eat lots of fruits and veggies, as they are filling and full of good vitamins and minerals.  Eat reasonable portions of lean protein. Drink more water. Take home half of restaurant meals.  Drink less.  Go to restaurants less.  Intermittent fast by making lunch my first meal and not snacking after dinner.  Stop snacking between meals.  Eat healthy fat for satiety and nutrition. Go on walks most days.  Plan and track my food.  Track my weight. Learn about how my hormones affect my experience and weight.   Get fat adapted. Yoga twice a week for strength, flexibility, and mental health.  Get coached on why I want to over eat.  Allow urges but do not reward them.  Get ThetaHealing so I can clear limiting beliefs and feel better.

Result:  I can reach my healthy goal weight.

While each person's before and after models will be different, this gives you a perfect example of how different thoughts and feelings lead to different actions and results.

3.  Get support.

While of course you should hire me, it's a great idea to get additional support as well.  That might involve recruiting friends and family members to join you on your weight loss journey or hiring other professionals, such as a personal trainer, to work with you toward your goals.  The fact is, we humans are social, tribal creatures, and it's much easier to reinvent yourself when we have support!

Are you ready to reinvent yourself?  Let's talk live to see if you'd be a fit for one of my programs. Schedule a call at https://lisaduke.net/schedule

It’s Not a Knowledge Gap Around Food or Exercise

It’s Not a Knowledge Gap Around Food or Exercise

Women over 40 – no new meal plan or exercise plan to lose weight needed.

Yes, really.  Women over 40 – no new meal plan or  exercise plan needed to lose weight.

Most weight loss programs give you a meal plan and an exercise plan – as if the problem is that you don’t know that vegetables and walking are good for you!

But you know that.

As a woman over 40, you know enough of the basics around nutrition and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight.

You've studied enough about nutrition and exercise.

All you have to do is do what you taught your kids to do.

Eat your veggies.  Go for a walk.  Get a good night's sleep.

These basics of healthy living are all you need to do to lose weight as a woman over 40, especially once you learn about how your hormones work and are changing and how to balance all that out with some simple tweaks to how you live to let you have weight loss in a healthy and sustainable way.

What you don’t know is how to get yourself to do what you already know you should be doing.

It’s a behavior change problem, NOT a knowledge problem.

And I am an expert in figuring out and removing what’s blocking your ability to choose and enjoy the new behavior.

Weight loss is possible for women over 40.  I know, because I lost 50 pounds in 2020 at age 46 in the midst of a pandemic, when everyone else was gaining weight.

So why does the diet industry insist women over 40 need a new meal plan and a new exercise plan to lose weight?

Simple – because that's what they sell.

Meal plans, recipes, pills, supplements, exercise plans, work out videos – these are all scalable solutions that companies can develop once and then sell over and over very profitably and affordably.

The work we do together of deep diving into your psyche, uncovering what's been blocking your weight loss, healing your past, helping your inner child, changing the thoughts and feelings that have been causing you to stress eat or emotional eat – that's not as easy to produce in a factory and commodify.

But it may just be the work that changes the rest of your life had helps you lose weight and improve your health for the rest of your life.

And it's a skill set that translates to the rest of your life as well.

So when I tell you, hey women over 40 – no new meal plan or exercise plan needed to lose weight, I say it because it was true for me, it's been true for my clients, and therefore I truly believe it will also be true for you.

Let's work on it together.

I'm here to help.

The Hormone That’s Keeping Us Overweight

The Hormone That’s Keeping Us Overweight

Wondering why you can't lose weight as a 45 year old female?  Turns out most of what we've learned was wrong.

If you are like my client, Susan*, a 45 year old female, you may find you just can't lose weight.

Part of the reason is that the way we were trained is just… wrong, especially once we get into our 40s and 50s, when as women our hormones start to get wacky.

Were you taught to:

– Eat low fat.

– Eat every two hours so you don't get hungry and overeat.

It turns out most of what we were taught about how to eat to lose weight is exactly the opposite of what science and experience are showing us actually works, and one specific hormone is a lot of the reason why.

Now by way of disclaimer, I'm not a doctor or a nutritionist, and in fact I haven't even stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.  So please do your own research in addition to reading what I'm sharing, but this insight was a big part of my weight loss success and is helping my clients, so I share it with the hope that it will help you, too.

One of the main hormones you need to understand if you want to lose weight is insulin.

Insulin is basically our body's response to sugar in the blood.

When we get a normal, natural amount of sugar, such as what's in fruit, our body goes to work moving that energy out of our blood and into our muscles (to use as quick energy) and then into fat cells, to be stored for future use.

After storing all that sugar, insulin levels drop back down.  Once they do, your body can use that energy in your muscles to do things like take you on a walk or  power your brain while you think about this blog post.

When sugar gets used up and insulin is low, your body can then access stored fat for additional energy.  It's like a second fuel tank for emergencies!

The problem is, if we overeat at every meal (without realizing it), eat lots of refined sugar and flour (which breaks down into sugar), and are almost constantly snacking, our insulin never drops down and our body never switches from fat storage mode to fat burning mode.

Now this is very much a layman's explanation, but thinking about what I was eating and when I was eating it with an understanding that I had to get out of fat storage mode and into fat burning mode helped me eat more veggies, lean protein, and plant-based fat, smaller portions, and helped me snack less.

So at the end of the day even if I don't quite have the science right, if this thought supported me in doing what I needed to do to lose weight, that's good enough for me.

Do you see how for a 45 year old female, getting your blood sugar down so your insulin can go down and you can access your stored fat for fuel will help you lose weight?

How to Create a New Habit

How to Create a New Habit

Create healthy habits and you'll be on auto-pilot to your goal.

Wondering how to create new healthy habits?

The art and science of creating new habits are keys to weight loss as a woman over 40.

To create new healthy habits, it's important to understand the components of a habit.

The components of a habit break down into cue, behavior, and reward.  Once you are able to put all 3 of these pieces into play, you’ll be able to create a new habit in no time.  And once you have the right habits, getting to your goal is easy.

So the cue piece is what will remind you to do the new behavior.  That cue might be a reminder on your calendar or your phone.  It might be a Post-It Note on your bathroom mirror.

The behavior is the new thing that you want to do on autopilot.  For weight loss, it might be something like drinking more water or going on a walk around the block during the mid-afternoon to wake you back up for the final stretch of the workday.

The reward is what makes it stick.  It can be as simple as thinking “YES!” to yourself when you complete the behavior.  Or it could be a quick text to your friend or your coach to celebrate you success.  Whatever you use as a way to celebrate helps your brain realize that this was important.  The emotion is what helps it get stored and repeated by the subconscious brain.

By using the 3 components of a habit to reprogram your brain, you'll create new healthy habits in no time to speed you on your way to weight loss as a woman over 40.

Step 1 of the ACE Weight Loss Methodology

Step 1 of the ACE Weight Loss Methodology

As a woman over 40, are you looking for an innovative approach to weight loss?  Try the ACE Weight Loss Methodology, developed by and for women over 40 to help them lose weight.

Most traditional weight loss programs give you a meal plan and an exercise plan, but they don't give you additional willpower to follow those weight loss plans.

What you need is an understanding of what's blocking your ability to eat healthy foods, get in healthy movement, and take the time and invest the money to improve your health.  The ACE Weight Loss Methodology was designed to do exactly that.

Step 1 of this proprietary weight loss methodology is AWARENESS.

If you are trying to lose weight, I actually recommend you eat when you are hungry (I know, crazy talk, right?!?).

The flip side of that is I recommend you don't eat when you aren't hungry.

Instead, take some time to ask why, if you are not hungry and you want to lose weight, you are about to eat.

It may be as simple as marketing.

Who exactly told us breakfast was the most important meal of the day? Was it someone selling cereal?

What if you were to delay breakfast until you felt hunger? That may be a very easy way to extend your fast, keep your blood sugar low, and keep you in fat burning mode instead of fat storage mode.

Why are you snacking in front of the TV after dinner?

Is it because you did that growing up, and now you get warm fuzzies from popcorn with a movie? If so, could you keep the memory, but drop the snack?

After you bring this first level of mindfulness to your eating, you may be able to break a lot of habits and start to lose weight.

Or you may find something deeper coming to the surface.

I personally noticed when my husband works late, I tend to get a snack as a way to reduce boredom.

When he doesn't work late and wants to do an extended TV marathon, I may get snacks to deal with restlessness.

When you decide to cut out eating when you are not hungry, those feelings come to the surface, and you can start to find zero calorie ways to deal with them.

That's how I help my clients through the AWARENESS phase.

Is this the kind of support you need to lose weight? If so, book a free initial consultation to get your questions answered and to sign up for my program.

Why You Can’t Stop Emotional Eating

Why You Can’t Stop Emotional Eating

Women over 40, are you wondering how to stop emotional eating?   I lost 50 pounds at age 46 by learning why I was emotional eating.  Once I understood why I was eating emotionally, I was able to stop, and once I stopped eating for non-hunger reasons, the weight came off with ease.

You see, what the mind wants and what the nervous system wants can be two different things.

This is one of the biggest challenges that gets in the way of weight loss.

The mind wants to change the eating patterns to lose weight, but if the nervous system needs those patterns to feel safe, the nervous system usually wins.

Your body's need to feel safer by emotionally eating will trump your mind's desire to lose weight every single time.

So what's the secret to how to stop emotional eating?

You need to discover alternative approaches to make yourself feel better without eating emotionally.

That's why EFT tapping can be so helpful. I believe it calms the nervous system.

If you're feeling stressed or anxious, or just bored and restless, you need a way to regulate your nervous system.

What do you use now to regulate your nervous system?

If it's more wine or more food than you know is good for you, you're not bad, broken, or weak.

You aren't lacking in willpower.

You just need additional tools.

You can't stop emotional eating as long at it is the only solution you have to a very real problem.

Coming up with a different solution to the problem your emotional eating is solving today is how to stop emotional eating.

I have other solutions.

I can teach them to you.

Let's work together.
